Per capita, Americans spend about seven and a half dollars per year—roughly the cost of a pack of cigarettes in New York City—to support the United Nations. That's for its general budget, war crimes tribunals, the UN children's fund, refugees...everything. But few Americans would want to spend even a penny if they knew it would go to waste. That's the challenge of the UN going forward: making the case that its house is in order and that its ready to roll whenever the dark shadows threaten "hells on earth."
