Developing Nations: The UN in Iraq

No issue in recent times has confounded the corridors of the United Nations more than the conflict in Iraq. Since Saddam Hussein was overthrown, the UN has played a very limited role in delivering economic development and social progress to Iraqi life. The attack on the UN headquarters building in Baghdad took 22 lives, and with it the hope that the organization could play a significant and immediate role in the reconstruction of the country. Despite this setback, the UN's relevance in the 21st century may depend on its ability to rebuild devastated nations like Iraq.
