Talk to Your Friends, Clubs, and Organizations
By talking to people in your community about the issues the United Nations faces every day, you are taking an active role in the United Nations' work. The resources are endless, but here are a few things that can get you started. Debate with your neighbors. Take the conversation to your local international club or university meeting. Make the discussion local.
Use the Great Decisions discussion guide as a starting place for conversations on the United Nations. This packet provides background information, discussion questions, and additional places to look for the information that interests you.
Courier is the Stanley Foundation's quarterly magazine. Download it or request copies for your group. The most recent issue asks, "Have we missed the mark?" on addressing terrorism. Read how the United States can work with Gulf states, the United Nations, and Southeast Asian governments to combat the threats we face on a daily basis.
In August 2004, photographer Judah S. Harris was commissioned to capture the daily happenings of the United Nations in photos. Our United Nations is a collection of these photos, accompanied by historic thoughts on the United Nations and further resources. You can view the sample display or request a copy of the photo book for you and your group.
The Stanley Foundation has produced two radio documentaries that address global security and the role of the United Nations. Both can serve as catalysts for group discussion or reflection. "UNderfire: The United Nations' Battle for Relevance" and "Security Check: Confronting Today's Global Threats" are available on CD at no charge by contacting the foundation.
Host a discussion, lecture, roundtable, or town hall meeting. The Stanley Foundation has helped our partners sponsor a number of local events, such as Red, White, and Blue Coming Together and The People Speak series. If you are interested in working together to sponsor a local event like these, contact us. Our events have been covered on Minnesota Public Radio and in local and regional newspapers.
