Reform for the Human Rights Commission

The most damning critique of the current Human Rights Commission is that it acts as a shelter for some of the most offensive states when it comes to human rights. The commission is often the victim of political maneuvering between member states, and because of this the secretary-general has called for a restructuring of the council.

The potential change regarding the current commission is to replace it with a smaller, more responsive Human Rights Council. While few specifics have been named to this point, the secretary-general suggests that council members be elected by a two-thirds majority of the General Assembly, thus ensuring that the human rights records of those states represented on the council are held to a high public standard.
